The VM gives one the ability to take snapshots for recovery purposes, and helps abstract away the underlying hardware.

Simplest is just plain Linux running Nextcloud.

Hard drives are cheap - Consider purchasing a new SSD and starting over on that.

If you change your mind, you swap back.
