 That's what I expected too, but it just smells like regular butter. There's no funkyness in the smell or taste. 
 i personally don't even mind that funk anyway, but it is a bit bitter

when you walk around the semirural and rural areas of Madeira you often get a whiff of a billy goat around, that's the main smell, it's oxidised capric/caprylic acid

if the butter is made well it shouldn't smell too much but it should smell distinctly goat versus cow
