What is this new tool Flotilla by @hodlbod? While we await his official write up on it, I have some quick thoughts.
Flotilla is a new Nostr application designed for community builders, offering a decentralized alternative to platforms like Discord. It enables community owners to have full control over their community, ensuring they can connect with fans and followers without the risk of shutdowns or censorship by centralized platforms.
Pretty cool.
To start building your community with Flotilla, all you need is a relay. Simply visit flotilla.social, set up your space, create rooms, and kick off the conversation!
Don't run a relay? That's fine! If you don't have a relay, you can still use Flotilla too. You can join existing relay's spaces and start chatting.
For example. Do you use my #NostrElites relay? We can have spaces there for my WoT community.
I'm anxious to see how people use this new community buildilng tool.
Actually, your wot relay could really make sense as a comfortable place to onboard newcomers since you already do so much of that. Thanks for the shoutout!
Hmm. Can anyone join a relay's space even if they don't have access to write to it? Otherwise I'd have to follow every person that I'm on boarding.
It does sound like an public relay would be better suited to this application, especially if it's going to be open to the public without a manual screening and onboarding process. That's just my impression, and as always, I could be wrong!
Yes, you could do read-only access, but you'd have to be careful to do it in a way that flotilla could deal with. There's no way to query permissions (looking forward to the LIMITS command possibly), so I can't turn UI elements on/off, users would just receive errors when attempting to send messages. Could be sub-optimal until I have that in
Maybe my WoT relay isn't the best for an on-boarding community since only WoT members can join. I'd have to use another relay, which is fine. Still a very useful tool for onboarding and helping people/answering questions.
Yeah, maybe not. But a starting point for newcomers where they can get help would be really useful.
I'd need to follow them though. For in person meetups and purple pilling, it could work for that.
Right, I just mean you could add a wide-open relay and maintain a blacklist. Wouldn't work against sybil attacks, but it would be ok in practice probably. Community building tools are only as good as the number of communities that use them. This sounds like a great idea, and it should be heavily promoted so that it becomes a thing.
These nostr devs are so talented. I'm always impressed by the things they build in such an efficient and effective manner. Open communication and a wide open universe to build in really sparks the creativity and inginuity!
