And for anyone on a budget like me, if you happen to be traveling through Contra Costa County - an excellent hidden gem for a good day hike is Round Valley Regional Preserve. Dogs are not allowed because the endangered Kit Fox lives there too.

Parking is free, some very steep grades, but well worth it.

There is camping but no potable water, you have to bring that yourself. I'm not sure if reservations are needed.

Beautiful hiking though, good birding too. Lots of Oaks.
