U don't have to be religious to understand that humanity is flawed and we need to foster good values. We can not take it for granted that everyone will just be good people on their own. 

Everyone can stray and fostering bad behavior will make bad people.

I am thankful that I got to go to school in a time where good behavior was still a virtue. I at least have the experience, even if it is ling time ago, of singing these songs.
