Or turn the left ||| bars into another representation of the level you are. Numbers could work but their are quite ugly.

Look at how sync for reddit worked for reference. Long hold a comment to collapse or expand further. Then truncate other replies based on what the user collapsed or expanded. Sync for reddit died after API changes but man... They had some awesome UI for reference in this exact scenario.
