Cypriot banking crisis in '13.  Was already self custodying, but this was my aha moment, realizing the cost holding keys is very negligible vs the cost of the counterparty risk when dealing with fiat-deluded people.

I've since realized that dealing with fiat-brained people is rarely a good idea in any context.
