Also remember example is your primary form of influence.  Your neice is learning how to interact with the world by watching you.  Don't dote on and fawn over her as if she's a goddess, but do treat every moment as a precious opportunity to model proper human behavior.  Be that reading, and reminding her not to disturb you for a bit, or sacrificing some reading to toss her in the air a few times.
