People on Twitter and Bluesky seem convinced that the typical experience on Mastodon is one where rogue flocks of digital Karen’s with Hall Monitor badges descend of them with cattle prods to punish them for politically incorrect speech. It’s comically caricatured nonsense, despite having a few meager grains of truth in it.

and the chicken/egg of it is that the more people that came here, the less that culture would be dominant.

Where can one obtain a cattle prod?

(Asking for a friend.)
@40cd5708 @7f02ec12 There’s always what happened to Wil Wheaton.
@40cd5708 Bluesky is a hotbed for believers of free-speech-for-me-not-thee. I tried Bluesky for a few weeks, and I'm sure that I've seen more anti-Black racism there than on Twitter, partially because BS admin want to avoid the responsibility of moderating user behavior. It's a mess of a site, and this is why they're still in closed beta.
@40cd5708 When I hear things like this, I remember that most people who briefly tried mastodon are people who joined during a mass twitter exodus and probably joined an instance that allows open registrations
@40cd5708 I think it's because those meager grains tend to be noxiously obstinate and can't "read a room" (any room) to save their own cringing over earnestness, in a way they stand out more.
@40cd5708 They think it's just like Twitter?
