Analysis: Delhi Is Supping With The Taliban In Our Interests

The Indian government is engaging with the Taliban in Afghanistan to further its strategic interests, including countering Pakistan's influence, monitoring terrorism threats, and countering China's presence. India reopened its embassy in Kabul in June 2022 to fully engage with the Taliban. In November 2023, the Indian government facilitated the takeover of Afghan diplomatic missions in India by Taliban representatives. This year, the Indian embassy in the UAE invited a former core member of the Haqqani network, eliciting shock and disapproval. Additionally, a senior Indian diplomat participated in a regional conference in Kabul organized by the Taliban government. While formal recognition of the Taliban is not imminent, India's engagement with the Taliban is seen as a "creeping recognition."
