The thing is that this proposal would have been immediately rejected or become very political very quickly. The joke took everybody out of they game and nostr:nprofile1qqs8d3c64cayj8canmky0jap0c3fekjpzwsthdhx4cthd4my8c5u47spzfmhxue69uhhqatjwpkx2urpvuhx2ucpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq3vamnwvaz7tmjv4kxz7fwdehhxtnnda3kjctvll3q2p used the opportunity to score. Sometimes we just need something out of nowhere to move things.
Understood. You addressed the elephant in a very smart, subtle way, diffusing the situation before it became a thing. Makes total sense. Thank you! Well played, my friend. 🫡💜
More like I saw the joke but made a real PR. I knew people would make fun of it and that would give power to the other side to react. Since the PR didn't really break anything, it was easy to feel bad and just support the freedom some people want to say their pronouns.
People always had this freedom which you of course know, you can put anything in your metadata and sign it. Not having every possible names field in the repo isn't blocking anyone's freedom.
Yep, but proposing a nip just to standardize that was going to stir a lot of emotions.
Pronouns aren't just about "progress" or "wokeness." In a highly distributed environment with colleagues from around the globe, it can be challenging to infer someone's pronouns based solely on their name, especially when you're not familiar with names from different cultures. For instance, I often struggle to determine how to address someone from a non-Western country. Even within Western countries, names can be confusing—like "Michele," which is female in French and male in Italian. Pronouns provide clearer information than "gender" because gender is personal information that remains private, and you don't need to concern yourself with it. Simply use the pronouns they provide, and that's it—no conflict, no confusion.
nostr:nprofile1qqs8d3c64cayj8canmky0jap0c3fekjpzwsthdhx4cthd4my8c5u47spzfmhxue69uhhqatjwpkx2urpvuhx2ucpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq3vamnwvaz7tmjv4kxz7fwdehhxtnnda3kjctvll3q2p wasn't wrong about it being a potentially neutral and totally optional feature. But neither was nostr:nprofile1qqsw9n8heusyq0el9f99tveg7r0rhcu9tznatuekxt764m78ymqu36cpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuat50phjummwv5hszymhwden5te0wahhgtn4w3ux7tn0dejj7qg4waehxw309an8yetwwvh82arcduhx7mn99uuwx66a wrong that it's bloat - the profile field is flexible enough as is to support this already and it's unlikely any special computational privilege is needed for this field, especially considering it won't be normalized (if Rabble gets his way and it's a flexible field). nostr:nevent1qqstg0h37237pldcp4u2msa9k3wjjgpkpezcz6mv385u54sh3d2gldspz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7q3qgcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqxpqqqqqqzlz7kzl
I think it's not something important since you can add it in the bio… but who cares, whoever wants to implement it can do it, go ahead
i find it intriguing how compared to 2014 it's now the opposite political group that gets offended by a pronoun joke
There is always some drama on anything you want to do. The best pushers figure out a way to move things forward in spite of it.
One of the first things I noticed when I came to the nostrsphere was that anons called themselves they/them but then in different contexts they took issue with why another person would call themselves they/them. Glad that you added the pronouns and here’s to people identifying however they choose
that's literally what makes nostr great, the ability to present yourself however you want and use the protocol however you want. @Alex Gleason 🐍 is making nostr great again 🫡
People's livelihoods have been destroyed for not playing along with pronouns. People have been led to suicide for identifying too strongly with pronouns. It's extremely unhealthy in either direction.
that's a really shallow and nonsensical characterization of gender dysphoria
An app or webpage that allows you to update/view pronouns for nostr profiles might get more traction than some other projects because it seems to trigger lot of people. My pronouns will be floppy/fd0.
