San Francisco's Muni Metro light rail system is set to upgrade its train control system, finally ditching floppy disks used since 1998. The $212 million contract with Hitachi Rail will bring the system five generations ahead and provide support for 20-25 years. The upgrade aims to address concerns over data degradation and expertise in outdated programming languages.
