'Radical' stance follows China-US rift

During the trial of Next Digital founder Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, former Apple Daily ex-editorial writer Yeung Ching-kee testified that Lai invited anti-China writers to his home for dinner and called on foreign countries to impose sanctions on China and Hong Kong officials. Yeung also mentioned that Lai only gave instructions during internal meetings and that he had never objected to Lai's opinions. Yeung revealed that the launch of Apple Daily's English edition was discussed during a dinner gathering at Lai's home, where Lai expressed hope that the US government would adopt stronger measures and sanctions against China. Yeung also mentioned that Lai instructed him to find writers to write insider news of power struggles between China's top-ranked officials for the English edition. However, Yeung eventually informed Lai that he was unable to find a suitable writer for the topic. Yeung also shared that he had been a major contributor to Lai's Twitter posts and that another contributor had resigned after Lai disclosed his role online. Yeung's testimony also highlighted that the United States fell out with China after then-US Vice President Mike Pence's speech in 2018, which influenced Apple Daily to take a more radical reporting angle on the 2019 protest.
