I think it was a Margaret Killjoy podcast that I was listening to recently that dealt with a very similar notion. If I recall correctly, middle and upper class women's virginity was prized but working class attitudes were much less shaming toward sex work. So it's not even necessarily as simple as a society being pro or anti, but looking at the schisms within that society too.
