 Labour's day of reckoning still in the air
==========

Labour performed better than in the 2019 local elections but failed to gain further from the gains it made in the 2023 local elections. Smaller parties like the Liberal Democrats and Greens secured more seats than anticipated. In Wokingham, Andy Ng Siu-hong, a BNO migrant from Hong Kong and ex-Hong Kong district council member, won a seat on the local council as a Liberal Democrat candidate. The Conservatives lost votes to Reform UK, but Labour was unable to win over most of the defected votes. Former Conservative voters chose smaller alternatives like the Liberal Democrats, Greens, or Reform UK as a protest against the party leadership of Rishi Sunak. Sunak was installed in a coup without a national party vote and was involved in toppling Boris Johnson and forcing out Liz Truss. The split among the Tories is similar to the divide among US Republicans. Labour may become the largest party in parliament after the next general election but may need to form a coalition with a smaller party to control the house. The Liberal Democrats, with an ex-Hong Kong district council member affiliated, could be the king-maker after the general election.
