After that, it's essential to take steps to preserve your food.

Before an outage, make sure you have a plan in place. Store dry ice on top of your freezer shelves or in the fridge to keep things cold. If you don't have dry ice, prepare a cooler by layering frozen foods, perishable items from your fridge, and more frozen foods. Add ice packs or ice around the food to maintain a consistent temperature.

If you don't have a cooler, use your freezer instead. Just remember to put fresh supplies of ice in bowls around the food to prevent melting. When it comes to frozen foods, refreeze or cook thawed items as long as they're at 40°F (4°C) or below and contain ice crystals.

Remember: when in doubt, throw it out! Check for unusual odors, colors, or textures before consuming any food.
