The article is cagey on exactly where his OPSEC went wrong, but the fact they know about all his internet searches suggests he wasn't using a VPN.

 Yeah, it looks like he was smart with the money, but ill prepared and/or woefully un/misinformed in regards to general internet privacy

 There is the potential that netflow data was sold across any potential VPN providers as well metadata could have been extracted around the XMR nodes they were connecting to.
