The ultra low time preference crowd underestimates the importance of enjoying life along the way. I once knew an older couple that had worked hard and saved their whole life, had a sizable nest egg built up and planned to travel the world in retirement. The wife had a stroke and had to live the rest of her life in a nursing home, died within a couple years. All the money they had saved went to cover her healthcare costs and the husband spent her last days visiting her in the nursing home. It was so sad. We should of course plan for the future, leave something for future generations if we can. But we also need to remember that nothing is guaranteed, and life is worth enjoying now.
