I guess what I was saying was that from 1950-1970 suburban white folk (who which my family was firmly in that camp) could see themselves not as "dominant" but rather "just normal." We didn't need to defend our position, we could see ourselves as "nice people." Of Southerners at the same time had their dominance challenged and fought back -- as we are seeing today.
