likely the opposite, not adding sugar, although I can't think of why anyone would add sugar to food in the first place

I see, true. I've been on seasonal fruit and veg for 20+ years, also no alcohol (which has sugar), and I forgot people considered candy food. Now I remember just today I read that "Colon cancer is up 500% amongst children 10 to 14." It's horrific.
Fruit isn't much different from candy. Grapes are really sweet. Dates are very sugary too.
It was sugar free recipes. Cutting the habit of sugar. I have a chocolate sweet tooth, but I was more of a salt lover, so my weakness is carbs, lots of pasta, breads, not healthy
Low carb diet is a lot more expensive.
Actually I have been eating less since doing this keto. I think I was spending way more when I was carbo loading. I make all kinds of things that cost about the same. Tofu Salad, egg salad, chicken salad, steaks (cubed steak, although cheap cuts, is budget friendly), apples and berries....Yeah, I think I spend about the same or less. Interesting. I will have to do the math.
Pasta is usually very cheap. Can be just a buck a day. Hard to do that with eggs and chicken.
