It does sound like an public relay would be better suited to this application, especially if it's going to be open to the public without a manual screening and onboarding process. That's just my impression, and as always, I could be wrong!

 Yes, you could do read-only access, but you'd have to be careful to do it in a way that flotilla could deal with. There's no way to query permissions (looking forward to the LIMITS command possibly), so I can't turn UI elements on/off, users would just receive errors when attempting to send messages. Could be sub-optimal until I have that in 

 Maybe my WoT relay isn't the best for an on-boarding community since only WoT members can join. I'd have to use another relay, which is fine. Still a very useful tool for onboarding and helping people/answering questions. 

 Yeah, maybe not. But a starting point for newcomers where they can get help would be really useful. 

 I'd need to follow them though. For in person meetups and purple pilling, it could work for that. 

 Right, I just mean you could add a wide-open relay and maintain a blacklist. Wouldn't work against sybil attacks, but it would be ok in practice probably.
