I read the Hyperion Cantos, too, and loved it (okay, there is some weird stuff, especially the MC's relationship with the girl in Endymion, but otherwise it was such a cool story!). I immediately looked for more Dan Simmons's books.
The next one I read was a kind of right-wing dystopia (I mean, the ideas were right-wing) where climate change was a hoax. It was so gloomy & depressing, I didn't enjoy it at all.
