UK's Sunak proposes tax cuts for pensioners in new election pledge

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has proposed tax cuts for pensioners in his latest campaign pledge. The Conservative Party plans to introduce a new age-related allowance and deliver a tax cut of around £100 ($128) for each of the 8 million pensioners in 2025, rising to almost £300 a year by the end of the next parliament. The proposal, called 'triple lock plus,' will cost £2.4 billion a year by 2029/30 and will be funded through the government's plan to raise an extra £6 billion a year by clamping down on tax avoidance and evasion. The number of pensioners in Britain rose by 140,000 to 12.6 million in the year to February 2023. The upcoming July election is predicted to end 14 years of Conservative rule in the country.
