Just quoting this but really I'm forking the conversation a bit:)
I don't know anything about the project, the dev, the funding criteria of OpenSats... (Or anything really tbhlol.) I think these reservations about circle jerkery are reasonable.
Generally speaking (I'm not saying that this is what is happening this scenario, more a possibility) I also quite like the idea of an alternative funding body for the arts. Not really for me to say if the project in question is more an art project or not. But it's the sort of project which could function as a highly shareable (some could argue gimmicky, again I'm reserving judgement) marketing vehicle to get into social feeds beyond nostr, into tech press etc. As an art project. Just a possible view on this.
But generally speaking on art projects, whether this is one or not. I think patronage of the arts by this sort of grants allocation couldnbe interesting and fucntion as marketing. Alternative arts funding is a recurring thought in my limited travels around bitcoin (crypto) socials. There's a lot of moaning about the state of arts (film, literature, sound, visual..). And maybe the slogan 'bitcoin fixes this' could actually work here lol. Bitcoiners and shitcoiner traders with insane wealth could be patrons of the arts on a significant scale?
There are lots of common in-jokes about the state of art grants and the box ticking exercises - mention or shoehorn some of these: community-focused, diaspora, queer, decolonisation etc.
Something like OpenSats could be an alt arts grants org without these silly and derided tick boxes, maybe? (I personally wouldn't trust a bit/shitcoiner grant allocation team, but would prefer a 3rd party body. Bit/shitcoiners, from what I can tell seem to like twee bullshit Banksy 'street art'. No offence lol).
Obviously this could be done on a small scale with v4v or buying off individual artists. But on a larger scale I think it could be culturally significant. And it's also marketing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Just an #unmarketing #idea
