A new book, "Slouch", sheds light on the history of posture science and its impact on society. The book reveals that prestigious colleges in the early 20th century required freshmen to be photographed nude as part of a posture evaluation. This practice was later discontinued due to protests, but not before many universities destroyed their archives. Research has shown that good posture does not necessarily predict back pain or musculoskeletal disabilities later in life.
