How do you reference time? Why?

The first book takes place in a university town, so often through the tolling of a bell. In general, I use text, I guess. If this were a more digital world, I'd probably use numerals.
I also reference changes in weather and lighting. Why? The story takes place across a few seasons. Simple as that.
Also, just generally, this is roughly how I notice time.
