The fediverse is getting its own TikTok competitor called Loops. When Noops? https://techcrunch.com/2024/10/25/the-fediverse-is-getting-its-own-tiktok-competitor-called-loops/
I think most of it is very easy to implement in Nostr but the real layer which is missing is a way for machine learning to pick which notes to display based on user activity and engagement. That’s buildable and a lot easier/cheaper than it was when TikTok or even IG reels were developed. But we have no way to bundle up user engagement data and send it to a trusted algorithm service. We could do a DVM or custom relay to display the content based on the algorithm service. The other issue to address is that TikTok and its clones are very optimized for performance with incredible low latency uptime. You need a good CDN and really optimized clients.
It's all things can could be built and features and performance metrics that could give similar user experiences. I believe it's all doable. It's just going to take a lot of time and a lot of money. I feel as if we're seeing a lot of leapfrogging happening and outside perception of this is powerful. That probably hurts adoption too.
There are some of the decentralized implementations like 3speak etc. But all of them are required with video hosting level servers, which doesn't come cheap. Hive, SUB, Steem all of them host the video on external networks in their respectable sister sites which use the IPFS in the backend. I think Nostr can benefit from doing something similar?
