You don't need the whole blockchain. 
You can run Bitcoin nodes in prune mode. 
I have 3 Bitcoin nodes. 
1 runs with a blockchain of 2GB, the other runs on 30GB, and the last one runs using the whole blockchain which is currently around 600GB.
