 Scammer sentenced after London victim pays £22,000 for shoddy roofing
==========

Darren Conroy, a man from Southwark, has been sentenced to 16 months in jail for scamming a north London resident out of £22,000 for shoddy roofing work. The scam began in December 2020 when two men called 'James' and 'Richard' convinced the resident that their roof needed replacing. They claimed to be from London Top Roofing Ltd and quoted the resident £43,000, demanding a deposit of £22,000. The work was subcontracted to another roofing company, who charged the resident an additional £3,655 for building materials and labor. The resident contacted the trading standards team, who discovered that London Top Roofing Ltd did not exist and their website was fake. An expert surveyor found that the work was unnecessary and substandard. Darren Conroy admitted to two offenses under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and was sentenced to 16 months for each offense. Islington Council will seek compensation for the victim. The council encourages anyone who suspects fraudulent activity to report it to them.
