OpenAI, led by Co-founder and CEO Sam Altman, is currently generating about 100 billion words per day. Altman stated that to achieve this massive number of words, OpenAI needs more graphics-processing units (GPUs). Altman is in talks with investors, including the UAE government, to raise funds for a tech initiative that would boost the world's chip-building capacity. The project could require raising as much as USD 5 trillion to USD 7 trillion. Altman has visited South Korea to discuss setting up a global network for AI chip manufacturing with key chipmakers. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, two South Korean chipmakers, have a combined market share of over 90% in the global high bandwidth memory (HBM) market.
