 Container port's big drop in the ocean
==========

Hong Kong's container port has dropped out of the top 10 container ports in 2023 for the first time, according to Alphaliner's recent report. The volume of containers handled in Hong Kong fell 14.1 percent to 14.3 million units in 2023, resulting in the city losing about one third of its container business in the past decade. Trading and logistics, which contribute more than one fifth to Hong Kong's GDP and employ over half a million people, are expected to be significantly impacted. Major shipping companies are reported to be skipping Hong Kong in their schedules for 2025. Transport and Logistics Secretary Lam Sai-hung is urged to take action to get Hong Kong back on these major shipping schedules.
