I know cannabis and hydrocarbons do more good for humans than harm, and they work. If the new things were actually better, prohibition wouldn't be in any way necessary.

Cars, gunpowder, the printing press.. weren't prolific because we successfully banned horses, arrows, and going to church.  The reasons they succeeded are more inherent to the power shift those technologies represent 😉
