It's supposed to explain why he was stupid enough to just eat that devil fruit out of spite.  He's a character that makes a lot of stupid mistakes because of his persistence but starts to learn to be more empathetic over time and less of a punk.. still an irresponsible punk but less so over time.  I get it, I think.
