It is annoying that this writer feels a need to assert & to reiterate his impeccable standing as a rationalist, a materialist, etc — the sort of ritualistic utterance that Jeff Kripal (I think) wryly calls a "protective incantation". But Jesse Bering here deserves credit for being openminded about possible nonmaterial aspects of the experiences he relates. And Scientific American deserves credit too for fostering this kind of discussion in recent years.
