It's the economy, stupid: How the Modi, Manmohan and Vajpayee years compare on growth front
==========
India's per capita GDP during the UPA years fell compared to its peers, while it increased during the Modi years. In 2004, India's per capita GDP was 35% of its peer group, but by 2014, it fell to 30%. However, in the Modi years, India increased this ratio to 37% in 2019 and further to 42% in 2024. During the Vajpayee years, the ratio rose from 30% to 35%, but fell back to 30% at the end of UPA. India's economy lagged behind its peers when the Congress was in power. India's per capita GDP crossed that of Pakistan in 2006-07 and that of sub-Saharan Africa in 2015. India's economic size relative to China shrunk from 37% in 2004 to 19% in 2014, but increased to 22% in 2024. India's GDP growth and per capita GDP growth were lower than other BRIC countries. India is expected to become the third largest economy by 2029, 14 years ahead of the target set by the UPA government in 2014.
