When I joined #Nostr, we didn’t even have #zaps yet, but I instantly saw how transformative Lightning embedded into the protocol would be. I spent weeks testing different wallets to see what worked, what didn’t, and shared what I learned. I put out a call to find other node runners to grow the network and promote self custody. We’ve come a long way since December of 2022. No one can tell me any of this was a waste of time. Every day we see another reason why we need freedom technology, and specifically this.

Sleep well, brother. Those days were pure magic.
I remember those days. It was glorious.
GN and thank you for your hard work in helping to pioneer nostr.

GN 💜 Very cool. I joined the day after Snowden. Time flies. What a ride, and it's only now just getting started!

 @jb55 is the GOAT
Just bought some hardware so I can run a node. Still don't understand very well how to set it up, but I'll get there I suppose. Would love it if you can recommend any resources. I've read lots, but there's lots out there so it's not easy to find what's clear and helpful. Any thoughts on breez wallet?
You can join @The Nodestrich ♾️ group and learn about different node setups. We’ve been helping people get started for a year and a half.

I’m personally not a Breez user, I never had a great experience with it.
Thanks a million. Joined, will follow.
Breez seems promising for a plug and play, ordinary person's lightning wallet, but it's still in beta so I haven't used it much. Everyone seems to like Phoenix, so I thought of giving that a go... Still, I want to be able to suggest something to people who aren't interested in learning about funding channels and such. Breez is the only promising self custodial solution that I've found so far...
If you want self custody, learning how channels work comes with the territory. I haven’t used Breez in a while (wild that it’s still in beta!), but if I remember correctly, it charges the user a setup fee to open a channel when receiving an initial payment. I think they do their best to hide the channel management from the user, but some of it is unavoidable, and users will have questions about why they’re being charged a fee up front to receive via Lightning vs. on-chain where fees are only calculated when sending a transaction. It’s an important distinction because custodial Lightning wallets have spoiled users into thinking this process is free and works like Venmo.
Agreed, and most likely the average user will opt for a custodial solution over something like breez. I've read about the possibility of using Litecoin and atomic swaps as a virtually feeless way to onboard onto lightning, which could help someday... Personally, I'm willing to do the work and put up the capital to use it, but to get mass adoption I'm sure that things will need to be easier.

That said. In 1995 Linux on the desktop seemed like a pipe dream. Now everyone uses Linux, on their smartphones. Sure, it's Google... But if that can happen, then lightning can happen for the average dummy too.
Yes, we’ll get there and we won’t need altcoins to make it work.

If someone just wants to play around with sending and receiving Lightning payments they can use Coinos.io. If they want a Lightning bank (and they can access it where they live), I send them to Strike.me.

I think Breez has a place in the mix, but I’m currently more interested in things like Alby Hub which is more of a technical hurdle to get started using, but gives you much more control.
Thanks again, I'll look at those too.
@ZEUS has a node in the phone consider them
I’m a Zeus user, because it’s the best app to connect with the nodes I run. It also does give you the option to run a mobile node and even a way to receive payments when offline with a Lightning address.
I was reading about Zeus and liking it. This is very helpful. Thanks a bunch.

@Start9 is the easiest way to setup a node and other applications to interact with it. Give it a try.
Good advice. I'm on my way...
Start9 has a good plug and play to get started with. DIY version or prebuilt.
Yes, definitely compare Start9 and Umbrel, and if you have your own hardware just make sure it meets the specs for what you want to run. You can also install @Alby Hub on a lot of different devices, with or without an existing node so definitely check them out.
 💯

Even without zaps this protocol has so much potential. #zaps increased its potential amazingly.

#nostr ftw 🙌
Speaking of which, your zaps aren’t working right now…
Was restarting and updating my node. Should be working again. Thanks!

We thank you and your kind for saving us from the matrix sir
That time before Zaps was a bit wild. It was like jumping into an old school forum for the 1st time. Excited but clueless on what I was doing 🤣🤣🤣

Still have the exact same nsec & npub 🫡

Man, I discovered Nostr in one of the darkest times in my life, going though the finale of a doomed relationship.

Back then, you were the first person I met from Nostr, and your enthusiasm reassured me I had stumbled upon something great… I remember when we first got zaps, and I zapped you in the middle of your talk, and we became frens! 🥹🫂 https://image.nostr.build/dc758b6fa4f55a89fc0554ea961b8719be64975018f4c95e8fab8d71dc0fce9c.jpg
This meetup was being filmed for @laurensieckmann's Unbanked documentary!

This is due to how Damus/Primal handles NIP-10 and nostr:reference
The Daniel's note in question has 3 different mentions/references

** Embedded note that Daniel wanted to mention (this uses nostr: format)

nostr:nevent1qqsr7hj00rtm00h8uyvhs0jfvzy2zeh5fdktn9c73rhzlwthp95tj5cpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqzyrhxagf6h8l9cjngatumrg60uq22v66qz979pm32v985ek54ndh8gqcyqqqqqqgd2l60l

**Onyx's note to which The Daniel replied
(This is in NIP-10 format with "reply" marker)

nostr:nevent1qqs94afkfchld4zc9hkaenttdwnaaf8z6qvywnqu28879seds49xqjcmntm6u

** The Daniel's original note "Never forget..." to which Onyx replied (This is in NIP-10 format with "root" marker)

nostr:nevent1qqswgsj7s2vfkhkj8ejhy4tzc633cj3fvmf8f3zy2hlqx3z6ulpuy4gpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqzyrhxagf6h8l9cjngatumrg60uq22v66qz979pm32v985ek54ndh8gqcyqqqqqqgvzxrmj

I am not sure why the nostr: embedded reference was ignored by Damus & "root" note is shown instead.
Maybe it's because the quote format is different in Damus -- it's uses a "q" tag instead of "e" tag 🤷‍♀️
I am not even sure what you're seeing in this post of mine as I am adding Amethyst too to the mix now 😅😅
