I would've guessed because nuts are small atomic highly nutritious units of energy that can be easily passed from one hand to another. 

 This makes a lot of sense, not sure most minds would make that connection right away 

 Despite bring amusing, not convinced the naming of nuts is optimal beyond the dev environment.
