My op sounds like a silly question that takes the piss out of modern Italy, but it is something that I really wonder about.  It bothers me for some reason.  I'm not Italian, so it's not personal.  It's just so baffling that all the personality and organizational traits of the people that built one of the greatest empires just seemed to vanish.
