GST Council Meeting: Govt to roll out Pan-India biometric authentication, Railways services exempted from GST & other key decisions

At the 53rd meeting of the GST Council, the government announced the rollout of Pan-India biometric authentication to combat fake invoicing. Railways services have been exempted from GST. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also announced retrospective amendments to input tax credit timelines under the CGST Act. Other decisions include a monetary limit for filing appeals, uniform GST rates for milk cans and carton boxes, exemption of hostel accommodation outside educational institutions, and clarification on GST rates for sprinklers. The Council also sent a request to reduce GST on fertilizers to the Group of Ministers on rate rationalization.
