 Final Fantasy died when Squaresoft was sold to Enix in my opinion, although some titles weren't as bad as others, there was a scale there.

 Dispite it's popularity, 7 was, and this is on record, a project to buy time for the development for 8, which is the Squaresofts magnus opum as far as I'm concerned.
