Being an "Nth Generation" European in the US from 1950 to 1990 (say) was an era where you just didn't have to think of anybody else.  "Safely" moved out to the suburbs where you never had to encounter Black people or recent immigrants of any kind.  Everyone mowed their lawns, painted their house white and everyone was the same.

Now they have to consider other actual people and they hate that.
