ETtech Explainer: WhatsApp's standoff with Centre over end-to-end encryption
==========
WhatsApp told the Delhi High Court that it would have to stop operations in India if it’s forced to break encryption for compliance with India’s Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021. The rules have traceability requirements to identify the "first originator" of messages. WhatsApp argued that breaking encryption would infringe upon users' fundamental right to privacy and is seeking judicial intervention to challenge the rule as unconstitutional. The government argues that WhatsApp cannot legitimately claim to protect privacy and that non-compliance with the rules could hinder law enforcement agencies' ability to track fake messages.
