The Human Rights Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the Finney Freedom Prize, an award designed in Hal Finney’s memory to celebrate global achievements in the area of Bitcoin and human rights.

Hal Finney was a renowned civil liberties and privacy advocate, open-source software developer, and electronic cash pioneer. Known for his mantra that “the computer can be used as a tool to liberate and protect people, rather than to control them,” Hal spent decades working on open-source privacy and freedom software, and his career culminated in making historic contributions to Bitcoin in the project’s early years, before his life was tragically cut short by ALS in 2014.

The Finney Freedom Prize will be awarded to the person who does the most for Bitcoin and human rights in each halving era.
