 My guess is - assuming that we are all spiritual beings, and that God is real, the spiritual battle is the battle between good and evil. People that are good-spirited vs people that are evil-spirited. 

If Marty aligns Trump as good-spirited (in line with God), then the shooter is evil-spirited - a battle playing out on earth thru physical beings who are spiritual
