If you are worried about changing it in public stalls, just remember you can leave them in for 12 hours vs 4 for tampons. They won't interfere with other business that you might need to do while out and about all day. 

They don't last "forever" since they get soft and should be replaced from time to time but it's still a lot less waste than tampons and frankly when you find the right fit less gross.
