Who is this restraining force? It is the Church, filled with the Holy Spirit, standing in the gap and holding back the full manifestation of lawlessness. The presence of the church on earth is the restraining force against the power of darkness. Paul further clarifies in verse 7, "For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way."
