If God isn't real, how can he fend off demons?

I remember reading an interview with a guy who went to Iraq and came back crippled. He was sad because his recruiter promised him he would be protected from Iraqi weapons with a shield of "Jesus hellfire".

That dumbass wasn't better off for believing in his nonexistent divine shield. He was worse off, because without it he could have taken practical steps that might have actually helped, like taking cover, maintaining his equipment, or not signing up in the first place.

This applies equally well to social problems.
