This completely echoes my experience from business school. Looking back, the entire foundation of the monetary system was just assumed to be legitmate, above board, and thus never questioned. It was all the mechanisms and activities that sat atop the monetary rot that were picked apart, analyzed and used as tools to navigate an understanding of commerce. What garbage...what use is layer two if layer one is corrupt/false? Regardless of educational background, it is encumbent upon all of us to understand the origins/working of the economic lifeblood that essentially runs our lives and to search for understand the alternatives. I use homeschool coops as one of my mechanisms to pass this knowledge to the next group the would-be controllers will attempt to hoodwink.
