I may be wrong, but as a casual observer it looks to me like McCarthy made at least a half-assed effort to keep the gov't running, which meant keeping literal MILLIONS of people working and able to provide for themselves (shutdowns mean "no paycheck"). Meanwhile the rest of The Party(TM) wants to crucify him for not trying to score another ideological victory at the cost of those peoples' livelihoods. Shows where their priorities really lie.
