State Plans to Waive Fee for Female Students with Family Income up to ₹8L
==========
The state of Maharashtra plans to waive the fee for all female students with a family income of up to ₹8 lakh annually. This initiative is set to benefit over 20 lakh female students and will apply to professional programs such as medicine, engineering, and pharmacy. The decision follows a tragic incident in Parbhani where a student took her own life due to financial constraints. Currently, the government covers the entire tuition fees for students from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, while OBC, EBS, and EWS students receive only a 50% reimbursement. The policy change is expected to impose an additional burden of ₹300 crore on the state's treasury. The scheme will be discussed in an upcoming Cabinet meeting and is seen as a significant step towards increasing female participation in higher education in Maharashtra.
